Making a deposit for financial obligations

Important

This page is intended for people who have to make an extrajudicial deposit. For information on cheques sent by the Ministère des Finances, please consult the Cheque Information page.

Who can make a deposit

Any member of the public.

Reasons for making a deposit

Are you an individual or a representative of a corporation or organization? If so, you can make a deposit to meet one or more financial obligations as part of an out-of-court settlement.

The following are some of the reasons why you may need to make an extrajudicial deposit:

  • you owe a sum to a creditor who refuses to receive it or who is absent from the place where the debt is payable;
  • a sum is the subject of a dispute between several people.

Who to contact

The Bureau général de dépôts pour le Québec (BGDQ) of the Ministère des Finances.

Sums held at the BGDQ are on consignment. They do not belong to the government (see the États financiers de l'exercice financier clos le 31 mars 2024 of the BGDQ).

Procedure

Follow these steps before sending a sum to the BGDQ:

1. Create a file with supporting documents

You must include the following information:

  • detailed explanation of the situation;
  • the nature of the debt;
  • the contact information of the persons to whom the sum is to be paid (their name and last known address).

2. Send the file by email or mail

Upon receipt of the file, the BGDQ will analyze it. If the file is accepted, the BGDQ will explain in detail how to deposit the amount. Once the sum has been deposited, a receipt will be issued in the depositor’s name.
